Fireside Chats

Our fireside Chats feature guest speakers in a lecture/recital/discussion format. The events are held on Sunday afternoons in an intimate setting, often a member home, promoting a atmosphere of learning and socializing for members and guests. A reception follows the event.

Fireside Chat-Presentation - Sunday, April 6, 2008. 3:00 P.M.
Composing Classical Music Today-Jonathan Leshnoff, D.M.A., Associate Professor of Music, Towson University, Towson, Maryland.

How does a composer work? In a unique presentation to the Beethoven Society, Dr. Jonathan Leshnoff, an emerging young composer of classical music, will describe the creative process from ideas to final product, using a score and recorded excerpts.

Dr. Leshnoff will describe the technological aspects of composition and the use of computer programs in composition. He will also discuss the networking involved among performers and publicists for moving a composition into the music industry, as well as the development of commission agreements, and issues around copyrights and royalties. Business aspects and the business manager will also be discussed.

This will be a fascinating window into things you never imagined about how a composer functions in today’s world! Please visit Dr. Leshnoff’s website for additional information: www.jonathanleshnoff.com.

Presentation, followed by light food, wine and sodas.

$45 admission per person.

The Annual Maria Fisher Piano Competition for Young Soloists

The Beethoven Society's piano competition, named for our founder, Maria Fisher, is held annually at the performing arts center on the Georgetown University Campus in early June. Substantial monetary awards given to the winners attract highly qualified young pianists ages 12 through 18 from the metropolitan DC area as competitors. A board of professional pianista are chosen to adjudicate the event. The competitors are evaluated and receive personal comments from the jurors concerning their performance.

The Beethoven Society is proud to offer this event in an effort to reach out and to encourage the love and performance of music among talented young people. The event is open to the public. We guarantee a memorable day of listening to exceptional performances of remarkable pianists.
